created on 01.05.2011

Development of a 2-sensor scanner solution for reading address and code data on envelopes.

A postal service provider wishes to introduce a semi-automated scanner system for postal consignments in all his branches which can be used to read the address data on the front plus with UV lighting the fluorescent 1D code on the back and to further process this information in the system.

Requirements:

  • Compact design of both camera heads
  • High-resolution camera lens system
  • Highly sensitive sensor also and particularly in the fluorescent spectrum
  • Fast, reliable transmission of image data to the evaluation system
  • Reliable synchronisation of the two camera heads
  • Standard PC interface
  • Lowest possible price to minimise the cost of the overall system

Solution:

Development of a customised sensor headboards based on an Aptina 10-megapixel CMOS sensor (MT9J003), and integration of board hardware and software on a commercial Gigabit Ethernet interface platform (Pleora NTx-Mini).

Design Phase:

  1. Support and advice for the client during compilation of the specification
  2. Creation and validation of the design on the basis of the client specification. Selection of suitable components
  3. Development and design of the sensor headboard and integration of
    hardware on the interface platform
  4. Integration of the camera system software, development of customised functionalities
  5. Pilot production, beta tests on client’s premises
  6. Support during serial production
